Healthy Nutrition for a Healthy Life

(CNN)Which risk factor is responsible for more deaths around the world than any other? Not smoking. Not even high blood pressure. It’s a poor diet. Healthy nutrition is essential for a healthy life! Like Ultra-processed foods linked to increased cancer risk or as Tom Levitt says in his recent article in Huffington Post, We’re Already Seeing The Health Effects Of Pesticides – Just Not Where You’d Expect even if you are trying to eat fresh or fresh-er food, there’s always the risk of pesticide residue found on or in the fruit and vegetables before it ever got to you. He says “In all, around 70 percent of produce sold in the U.S. has pesticide residues, according to the annual “Dirty Dozen” report by nonprofit group The Environmental Working Group (EWG), which lists the foods with the highest and lowest levels of pesticide residues. It says we may be exposed to worrying amounts of pesticides.

My passion is healthy, organic home-grown food to make up a clean, safe and healthy diet. My pet peeve is: if we all know we should eat well, then why don’t we eat better? Here is an official 27-year global study showing in black and white consequences of a bad diet. It will kill you.

“While traditionally all the conversation about healthy diet has been focused on lowering the intake of unhealthy food, in this study, we have shown that, at the population level, a low intake of healthy foods is the more important factor, rather than the high intake of unhealthy foods,” says Ashkan Afshin, an assistant professor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

Dietary Risk Factors

Afshin goes on to say that “More than half of all global diet-related deaths in 2017 were due to just three risk factors: eating too much salt, not enough whole grains and not enough fruit. Those risks held true regardless of socioeconomic level of most nations”.

Interestingly, that is not all that difficult to overcome if you live in the U.S. or other developed country and have reasonable ability to make food choices. (If you live in a food desert, etc. can make choices non-existent.) But the researchers are saying there are three, 3, simple things you can do to have healthy nutrition and a healthy life. That’s it. 3. We can all remember three things. 1. Cut out salt, 2. eat whole grain foods and 3. eat more fruit.

This study is part of the yearly Global Burden of Disease report, prepared by thousands of researchers that track premature death and disability from more than 350 diseases and injuries in 195 countries.

That is going to require a coordinated effort between public policymakers, food growers, marketers and distributors, which will be a significant feat,” says Corinna Hawkes, who directs the Centre for Food Policy at the University of London.
